Description

An absolutely showstopping source of late-season color when other flowering plants are winding down for the season, Pink Muhly Grass, commonly called “Cotton Candy Grass” or Purple Muhly Grass or by some folks, is a very tough and exceptionally easy-to-grow North American native grass immensely popular for the profuse and beautiful clouds of airy pinkish-purple flowers it produces over a long period from late summer through fall.

The outstanding attributes don’t stop with the flowers. Throughout the warm season, Muhly Grass forms attractive arching mounds of glossy, hair-like green leaves that provide a unique, wispy texture in the landscape which contrasts remarkably well with many other types of plants. Excellent as an accent and truly stunning in groupings or massed.

You might also be happy to know that Muhly Grass is very easy to grow and low maintenance. When established it is exceptionally drought tolerant, requiring little if any supplemental water. The foliage can be cut back to an inch or two above the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a clump 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Pink Muhly Grass is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in small to large groupings in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Truly stunning in bloom in mass plantings on embankments, hillsides and slopes, where its roots act as a soil stabilizer for erosion control. Makes a nice centerpiece in combination container gardens and is a fine addition to seaside gardens, rock gardens, ornamental grass gardens and the Xeriscape (low water need). A lovely display for any sunny spot!

Suggested Spacing: 2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid borders or mass plantings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where Pink Muhly Grass is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Pink Muhly Grass is exceptionally easy to grow and maintain. It is exceptionally resistant to heat, humidity, sun, salt, and drought. Make sure to plant it in very well-drained soil. Add sand and or small gravel to the planting mix if necessary to ensure good drainage. It appreciates pampering the first year with adequate food and water to get its root system established. After this, it takes off on its own and is exceptionally drought-tolerant when established. Full sun is preferred for best flowering however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. we suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. If necessary, cut back foliage to ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring. It is also quite salt tolerant, making it an excellent choice for gardens near the sea.

Due to the cold weather we continue to have, I have not been able to plant the flowers yet. What I can tell you is that all of the flowers listed below are flourishing profusely. They have more than doubled in size and a couple of them have tripled. I do hope it warms up soon as they are getting too big for the house. I am anxious to see them grow around my pond and water garden area.
The packaging you sent them in was perfect for their transport. They all looked like they had been sitting on a shelf in a greenhouse rather than being pitched around in transit. I do admit the packaging was a bit of a puzzle getting them out, but well worth the effort.

These plants are so healthy, I hope they will grow in my clay soil, I can never find this type of grass anywhere near me so I jumped at the chance to buy from Wilson Bros when it became available. I have several grasses from you including the Muhlenbergia capillaris, pink muhly, which I saw on the Outer Banks, but thought I could never have. I now have 3 plus a Pennisetum alopecuroides, ‘Moudry’, and a Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’. When you have the Yellow Bird Magnolia back in stock, it will go in the middle of the triangle where the 3 white pines were cut, with grasses around. Yellow Bird is a hybrid with our native Magnolia acuminate. We had one of the cucumber trees, but it was too close to the porch and I had to have it cut about 20 years ago. I am also awaiting your restocking of The Rising Sun Redbud Tree.

I was a little sceptical as many online garden sites have been a big disappointment with poor packaging and near-death plants arriving at my door. But not Wilson Bros. The plant was very nicely packaged with enough moisture to ensure it’s life while it made the trip to my doorstep. I purchased gallon-container muhly grasses. They cost a little bit more than 3-inch container grasses from another company, but were well worth it. Each plant was approximately 1 1/2 to 2 feet high. They were carefully wrapped for mailing. Additionally, the soil and pot were carefully wrapped with material that prevented disruption and which prevented moisture evaporation. This grass seems very hard to get going. Wilson Bros has provided the best that we have received from multiple growers but they are a hold your breath till they really shows signs of acclimating to new surroundings. All the plants came in excellent condition and were a nice size. The first order was by phone and I got Spencer. He was so nice and helpful. The next order was placed online. I could not find these plants at any of my local nurseries. Shipment was very fast and with tracking info available. Can’t wait to see these plants take off and grow. Very good experience with this company and I will definitely be placing more orders.
